Why do permanent chewing teeth need special protection?

The first permanent teeth to erupt are the first molars – the sixth teeth. They erupt behind the last temporary baby molars. Permanent teeth erupt with lower strength / mineralization / of their enamel. In the mouth, the enamel / matures / and reaches its maximum hardness within two years after eruption. The fissures of the chewing teeth have a very different anatomical shape and depth and are often very narrow. Sometimes the enamel in them / matures / much more slowly during these two years.

On the other hand, it is impossible to remove the dental plaque / colonies of bacteria / accumulated in them with a brush and toothpaste. The bacteria produce acids that form cavities. Precisely because they erupt first and are exposed to the aggressive factors in the mouth the earliest and due to anatomical features, the sixth teeth form cavities the earliest. If they are not treated in time, complications develop and eventually lead to their extraction.

What are dental sealants?

Sealants are dental materials that are placed in the deep pits and grooves / fissures / on the chewing surfaces of permanent teeth and form a very thin, smooth and hard protective layer.

Why are sealants placed?

Cavities on the chewing surfaces of permanent teeth are the most common compared to cavities that develop on other tooth surfaces. Sealants protect chewing surfaces from the development of dental caries by forming a smooth and hard barrier between the teeth and the bacteria of dental plaque.
