What is Periodontal Surgery?

Пародонтална хирургия

Periodontal surgery is a dental procedure that improves the aesthetics of the smile and the function of teeth damaged by gum disease. Periodontal surgery is performed when conservative methods of treatment cannot affect inflammation of the gums.

The need for periodontal surgery is established thanks to professional x-ray diagnostics, which Bushkalova Dental Clinic has. This is how gum recession and tooth root exposure is diagnosed. Unfortunately, advanced gingivitis is irreversible. The good news is that through periodontal surgery, this process can be controlled and your smile restored.

It should be approached very responsibly when it comes to inflammation of the gums, because more severe forms of this disease can lead to:

Receding gums;

Bleeding gums;

Pain in the gums;

Loose teeth;

Loss of teeth;

Loss of bone mass;

Heart disease, stroke, etc.

Curettage

Curettage is a type of dental treatment that can be performed at any stage of periodontitis. It represents the removal of tartar, which has entered between the root of the tooth and the gum. Curettage is done on the teeth, usually under local anesthetic and helps the gums to heal. This, in turn, prevents the teeth from being exposed, which over time can lead to loosening and tooth loss.

Types of curettage

Closed Curettage

With closed curettage, the calculus is removed "blindly". Tartar is removed by means of a curette, which is used to work between the root of the tooth and the gum. This method is suitable when it comes to shallow gum pockets. With deeper pockets, the manipulations become much more complicated and the results more difficult to predict.

Open Curettage

Открит кюретаж

Open curettage involves opening the gum to expose the bottom of the periodontal pocket. In this way, the tartar becomes visible and is much easier to remove with the help of a curette. Usually, the bone mass around the tooth has depressions and sharp edges caused by the inflammatory process. They are filed and smoothed using a special cutter until smooth bone tissue is obtained again, and decontamination is carried out with a high-energy laser. When the pockets are not very deep and the tooth still does not move, the gum is sutured and the procedure ends. However, with deeper pockets, a large amount of bone mass may be lost as a result of the inflammatory processes. In this case, a bone substitute is added to restore the lost bone. The procedure ends with suturing the gum and placing a temporary periodontal bond.
