Orthodontic treatment with braces

Ортодонтско лечение с брекети

Braces are orthodontic appliances. for moving and straightening teeth. They are used for various orthodontic problems such as:

Crooked teeth

Crowded teeth;

Distances between teeth (trims).

Optimal results are achieved in a growing child and adolescence, when jaw growth can be modified. However, this does not mean that patients over 18 cannot improve their smile. In fact, about 20% of all patients undergoing orthodontic treatments are over the age of 18.

Disturbances in the normal position of the teeth rows relative to each other (Malocclusion) are no longer a problem. Most often, a fixed technique is used to correct them - braces, which can be metal and aesthetic (transparent sapphire or ceramic).

When the growth of the facial bones is complete, the orthodontist can arrange your teeth so that you smile beautifully, and perform pre-prosthetic preparation for aesthetic restoration of tooth surfaces worn down by improper alignment.

The treatment of dental and jaw deformities and anomalies in the position of individual teeth is carried out by orthodontist, after performing precise diagnostics and preliminary planning of future orthodontic treatment. In our practice, we rely on such proven specialists with many years of experience in the person of Dr. Gergana Rachkova-Doshkova and Dr. Birsen Kahraman.

How does the first meeting with us go?

The purpose of the initial examination is for the orthodontist to become familiar with:

The patient's complaints;

The history of the problem;

Problems with profile, facial symmetry and smile;

The condition of the dental arches and the relationship between them (the bite);

The presence of harmful habits (thumb sucking, mouth breathing, sticking the tongue between the teeth, lip sucking);

Problems with the jaw joint;

Oral hygiene problems;

Expectations from treatment.

Successful orthodontic treatment depends largely on the patient's motivation and their partnership with the orthodontistFor our youngest patients who use removable orthodontic appliances, moral support from parents and regular monitoring of the correct wearing of the appliances is extremely important.

Restoring balance in the maxillofacial area through correction of interdental relationships and harmonization of the internal and external muscle girdle are key to the physical and psychoemotional development of the individual.

How do they work?

These orthodontic appliances apply gentle but constant pressure to move teeth in the correct direction over time. There are several types of braces, and depending on which one you choose, there are some differences in the type and duration of orthodontic treatment.

What braces do we offer in our clinic?

The choice depends on the type of orthodontic problem and the patient's personal preferences. In our clinic you can choose one of the following types:

Metal braces

In recent years, metal orthodontic appliances have significantly improved their aesthetic appearance. They are now smaller, rounded, and almost invisible in the mouth. Braces are placed on each tooth by a specialist orthodontist., then they are attached to each other with the help of an archwire. Then, with the help of small elastic bands called ligatures, they are held firmly in place.

Despite the improved aesthetic appearance, metal braces remain visible, especially when the patient wearing them speaks or smiles. Usually, the ligatures are colorless, but many teenagers opt for brightly colored ligatures to be more noticeable and attractive.

Aesthetic braces

At the clinic, we offer two types of aesthetic braces – sapphire and ceramic.

Sapphire braces

Sapphire braces are a preferred orthodontic treatment option for people who care about aesthetics. They are transparent and almost invisible in the mouth.

Main advantages:

Aesthetics – as mentioned above, sapphire braces have a much better aesthetic appearance and are almost invisible. The sapphire crystal from which they are made blends perfectly with the natural color of the teeth.

Stain resistance – do not turn yellow or become stained by coffee or wine. They retain their transparency throughout the entire orthodontic treatment.

Comfort – they have a smoother surface and this undoubtedly brings much greater comfort during treatment.

Strength – Sapphire crystal is a very strong material, so this type of braces is very durable.

Ceramic braces

They also have a good aesthetic appearance. They are made of ceramic material and in general their advantages are similar to sapphire braces.

Aesthetic appearance – their color resembles the natural color of teeth. They are a great choice for people who want their orthodontic treatment to be as discreet as possible.

Soft and smooth – smoother and softer to the touch than metal braces. This reduces irritation in the patient's mouth.

Stain resistance – the ceramic material is very resistant to stains caused by food and drinks.

Comfort – Ceramic braces are more comfortable to wear.

Strength – The materials are very durable, which is a guarantee that the entire treatment will go smoothly. However, you should be careful about what you eat and avoid harder or sticky foods.

What is the best age to get braces?

Orthodontic appliances can be placed at any age, but the most appropriate period is when children are age 9 to 14 yearsDuring this period, the jaws and facial bones are more flexible because they are still developing. Braces are also effective for adults, but it may take a little longer to achieve the desired results.

How long do they last?

The answer to this question is strictly individual for each patient.. Orthodontic treatment with braces usually takes about 2 years. It all depends on the position of the teeth and the complexity of the orthodontic problem. For some people, treatment can be completed in less than 12 months, while for others it can take 3 years or even more.

Do braces hurt?

It is normal to experience some mild discomfort for a few days after your braces are fitted. There is usually some discomfort after they are tightened. Otherwise, braces are not painful.

To relieve discomfort after orthodontic procedures, you can take acetaminophen (paracetamol) or ibuprofen. If the pain does not go away after a few days, it is best to call your orthodontist.

How to care for braces?

Proper oral hygiene is even more important during orthodontic treatment. Plaque and tartar can easily build up around braces, which can lead to tooth decay and gum inflammation.

Our specialists will provide you with a detailed list of instructions. However, here are some basic things you should know:

Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a soft brush and fluoride toothpaste;

Floss your teeth at least once a day, paying special attention to the areas around your braces;

Rinse your mouth with antimicrobial mouthwash at least 2 times a day;

Avoid hard, chewy, or sticky foods;

Regularly visit the orthodontist for braces tightening and preventive examinations;

Oral hygiene during this period is especially important, so regular professional teeth cleaning is mandatory.

What foods are suitable to eat while wearing braces?

For the first few days after your braces are fitted, it is best to eat soft foods. Good options include:

Pasta;

Boiled vegetables;

Mashed potatoes;

Scrambled eggs;

Yogurt;

Soups;

Soft fruits;

Oatmeal.

Once the discomfort has subsided, you can start adding other foods to your diet. You should avoid hard and sticky foods such as nuts, caramelized foods, and crunchy fruits throughout your orthodontic treatment.

Maintaining the positive result after removing the braces

Every patient must use a retainer after treatment is completed. The retainer prevents the teeth from moving back into their old position. There are many types of retainers, so you should trust your orthodontist to choose the right one for you.

When should you call the orthodontist?

Outside of scheduled clinic visits, you should call your orthodontist if you have:

Prolonged pain;

You have a broken or loose brace;

Trauma to the mouth or face caused by braces;

Bleeding or infection of the gums.
