Hormones and oral health
Hormones are substances released by our endocrine glands and regulate all functions in our body. Hormones are different in different age groups and mainly affect the life processes of the body. In the oral cavity, they directly affect the soft tissues (gums and mucous membranes). There are several periods in which it is absolutely necessary to do preventive examination and consultation with a dentist.
The first such period is that of growth of the child's organism (the period of puberty). Growth hormones in this period regulate a number of functions. Preventive examinations, professional and home oral hygiene have an important place in the prevention of early (juvenile, aggressive) periodontitis.
Another moment important for the female gender is the periods associated with pregnancy and hormonal treatment. Pregnancy is a factor with which dental treatments, excellent oral hygiene and preventive examinations must be considered. During pregnancy, preventive examinations are important for the health of both the mother and the fetus. Hormonal therapies also significantly affect periodontal health and are risk factor for periodontitis.
Periods of menopause (climax) also change the situation in the oral cavity - the mucous membrane becomes more tender and sensitive, and atrophic changes develop in the soft tissues, and prevention and maintenance care prescribed by a dentist are essential.
People with diabetes are at risk for periodontal health. In them, the risk of periodontal abscesses is reasonable. Insulin levels significantly alter the oral cavity. In diabetes, preventive and professional oral hygiene care should be at very short intervals.
It is important to consult a dentist in case of hormonal problems, regardless of the fact that it seems insignificant to you.
